Bastianini To Launch From Second Row At Spanish Gp. Best Qualifying Of The Season So Far For ‘Diggia’

Gresini Racing Team Moto3 racer Enea Bastianini set the sixth fastest time – 1’46”827 – in this afternoon’s Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying. Therefore, despite a slight crash in the final stages of the session, which didn’t allow him to improve further, the 18-year-old rider from Rimini will start tomorrow from the second row of the grid.

Bastianini’s team mate, rookie Fabio Di Giannantonio, enjoyed a very positive Qualifying session: the 17-year-old rider from Rome will start tomorrow from the eighth row with the 22nd time, his best Qualifying performance of the season.

ENEA BASTIANINI (6th – 1’46”827)
“Today I was feeling very good on the bike and I knew I could improve my best lap time. Unfortunately in the final stages of the Qualifying I went a bit too fast at Turn 2 and I crashed. I was able to re-join the session right away and I tried to do another fast lap, but after the fall the rear brake lever was damaged and braking, therefore I couldn’t accelerate well. However, our pace is good and we are optimistic for the race: we can fight for the top positions”.

FABIO DI GIANNANTONIO (22nd – 1’47”734)
“We missed very little to achieve the goal we set ourselves, that was getting into the top 20, and actually we are also very close to top 15. Unfortunately in all my fast lap attempts I made a small mistake, so I think I could shave some other tenths. I’m happy because we have taken a big step forward, making significant progress compared to this morning’s FP3. I like the bike and I think we can still improve for the race; tomorrow we will have fun!”.

FAUSTO GRESINI
“Too bad for the crash which prevented Bastianini to improve further in the final stages of the Qualifying, but we are optimistic because Enea is happy with the bike and he feels comfortable. Luckily, despite the crash we retained the second row which is critical here because at this circuit is very important to stay in the top positions in the first corners. Obviously Enea is a bit disappointed because he knew he could do better, but we are confident and ready to fight in the race. Di Giannantonio got his best qualifying performance of the season, even though actually he was a bit unlucky, because he was slowed by other riders in the final corner of his last lap, when he was still improving his lap time. He had the potential to get into the top 20, but the race is tomorrow and the important thing is that Fabio is continuing to improve. It was important to take another step forward and we did it”.
