A JEREZ SPRINT RACE TO FORGET. CRASH FOR ALEX, DIGGIA OUTSIDE THE POINTS
It was an extremely complicated day the one that has just drawn to a close at Jerez de la Frontera with qualifying and sprint race with no real highlight for Team Gresini MotoGP.
The expectations were completely different as Alex Marquez had the potential for a great performance in qualifying had the rain not appeared in Q2.
From a possible pole position to a 12th slot on the grid, which turned into a trap. Two starts, the first one that sees Morbidelli crashing into Alex, with the latter “saved” by the red flag. The restart (11 last) turned into an exciting chase and battle first with Zarco and then Viñales: halfway through the encounter, unfortunately, a crash occurred at turn two, fortunately without any consequence, aside from some regrets.
An encouraging eleventh place was Fabio Di Giannantonio’s result for today in the sprint race. The Italian ended up very close to the points (top nine), and gathered plenty of useful information while finishing ahead of the other Fabio. There will be a new chance tomorrow at 15:00 local time for Team Gresini MotoGP.
DNF – ALEX MARQUEZ #73
“I did two very good starts, especially the first one as I was well positioned into turns 1 and 2. I had a coming together with Morbidelli who tried to pass me despite there was no room for it and so I ended up crashing. I’m not sure why he tried to overtake there. At the restart, I may have been too eager to make up ground. The limit is very thin with these conditions and we maybe should focus more on getting solid results instead.”
11th – FABIO DI GIANNANTONIO #49
“It was maybe our best MotoGP race, I’m really happy. We were close to the leader in terms of pace, we were good at the start (even better in the first one). It’s hard to attack on this track and with these conditions but we must be happy and start back from here tomorrow.”
