ALCOBA ON PROVISIONAL FRONT ROW AT PORTIMAO

Jeremy Alcoba gets a very promising start at the Algarve International Circuit by finishing the opening day of free practice in second position. The rider of team Kömmerling Gresini Moto3, who was crowned ‘Rookie of the Year’ last week, logged a 1’48.188secs lap-time, with only the current championship leader Arenas able to edge him.

With the Q2 basically sealed for the talented Spaniard, his teammate Gabriel Rodrigo has a lot of work to do in tomorrow’s FP3. The Argentine rider, who was comfortably in the top ten this morning, crashed out at turn ten in the key moments of FP2 and had to miss the final 20 minutes of the session.

Nothing is lost however, as there is still a chance to make it directly into Q2 from 9:00 local time (GMT +0).

2nd – JEREMY ALCOBA #52 (1’48.188)

“I wasn’t expecting such a strong start even though I must say I remembered this track a bit. We worked mainly with a soft front-tyre and a medium one at the rear-end and I felt strong straight away, even with used tyres. We must not relax however, although a start like this one is a good morale boost. This is quite a technical circuit and a fun one, very demanding and with a lot of elevation changes.”

22nd – GABRIEL RODRIGO #2 (1’49.171)

“It’s a spectacular circuit… I was here in 2014 but I forgot how good and fun it is. The day started off well and with positive feelings: this morning we were very competitive with the hard tyre, and then in the afternoon with the softer option we were on a top-five lap, but I crashed and compromised the session a bit. I got back on track, but I was lacking the right confidence. We can recover tomorrow no doubt.”
