DIGGIA NARROWLY MISSES MAIDEN WIN AFTER SPECTACULAR RACE AT MUGELLO

Another positive racing weekend comes to a close for Team Del Conca Gresini Moto3 at Mugello, for what has been the sixth Grand Prix of the 2017 Moto3 World Championship. Fabio Di Giannantonio has put together another incredible performance by coming inches away from what would have been his first win in the series to claim his third podium finish of the year.

The Rome-born rider was quick throughout all weekend: he topped the timesheets on the opening day before qualifying fourth – and being promoted to second on the grid. Today, ‘Diggia’ did his utmost on track and was always within the sharp end of the field; on the last lap, Fabio tried to pip fellow Italian Migno at the line but had to settle for second place, a result that helps him move up to third place in the standings, 30 points away from the top.

Jorge Martin had a less fortunate weekend after being demoted from pole to 13th place on the grid. The Spaniard had his shot at the lead, but then moved down the order and was ultimately fifteenth at the chequered flag.

“I’m really happy for Fabio” says team manager Fausto Gresini, “even though it would have been amazing to get the win. He was finally able to be consistently quick throughout the weekend and that’s the way I want to see him every weekend. Too bad for Jorge, who since Jerez is being unable to find his rhythm during the race. There’s a lot of work to do.”

2nd – FABIO DI GIANNANTONIO #21

“The idea was to be second entering the last turn and get the slipstream from Migno. I was where I wanted to be and did everything right, but he was super quick so I couldn’t overtake him before the line. It’s been an extremely good weekend nevertheless, for the team and myself. This is my third podium of the year: we really wanted to be competitive here and we did it, from start to finish. It has been the best racing weekend of my career so far.”

 15th – JORGE MARTIN #88

“It’s been a tough race, especially because I was feeling good at the beginning and managed to pass a lot of riders to even get into the lead. Then I suffered a bit in the middle of the group as there were a lot of manoeuvres at the limit and I was lacking a bit of grip at the rear-end. I fought hard in the final part of the race, but I got away with only one point. We need to focus and bounce back, starting from Barcelona!”
