LOWES NEAR THE TOP ON DAY ONE IN QATAR

Team Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 and Sam Lowes had a good start to the 2019 Moto2 campaign by finding good rhythm, logging impressive times and finishing fourth in the combined times of today’s two free practice sessions. His personal best lap-time of 1’58.954secs came in today’s second session; the Briton was among the few riders able to lap below the 1’59secs barrier as he was only three tenths of a second away from the top of the timesheets.

This lap-time could grant the rider #22 direct access to Q2 – following the new qualifying format for the intermediate class – with one session left, although in the Triumph-powered category the competition appears to be very levelled this year – with 22 riders in able to lap under the two-minute mark in their quick-lap attempts.

Lowes’s Kalex machine suffered a mechanical failure in FP1 as it suddenly stopped during the course of the session. The team led by Tommaso Raponi was able to fix the issue in no time; tomorrow, on the other hand, the chase for gold in Qatar will resume with FP3 at 14:20 local time (GMT +3) and Q2 scheduled at 18:50 (with first qualifying to begin 25 minutes earlier).

4th– SAM LOWES #22

“It was a positive day. We tried something with the rear-end of the bike, which gave us some good information. Maybe tomorrow we’ll try something different, and then we’ll pick the best one for the race. Overall it was a good day; shame we lost some track time in FP1 due to a mechanical problem – which was not a mistake of the team – so I’m really positive. I think tomorrow we can do a good job, we have a consistent base and we’re ready to fight for the top positions.”
