Fifth row for Lowes after difficult Sepang Qualifying

Aboard the Team Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 Kalex machine Sam Lowes set the thirteenth fastest time at the end of this afternoon’s Qualifying of the Malaysian Grand Prix, at the Sepang International Circuit.

The session to determine the starting grid was held once again with changing track conditions: in the final stages the asphalt was drying out, despite some tricky wet patches remained. Lowes, on track with rain tyres on his final run, lamented a lack of feeling with the tyres, but still managed to improve slightly on his final lap, closing the session with 2’23”187.

SAM LOWES (13th – 2’23”187)

“In the final stages of the Qualifying session, my feeling with the tyres was not good: maybe we should have gone with slicks, but it would have been difficult and I didn’t want to make a mistake. Unfortunately the conditions have been always very strange and we have not been really strong so far: however, hopefully we can improve a little bit in tomorrow morning’s Warm Up and then we’ll see how it goes in the race… It would be nice to race with stable conditions, wet or dry, instead of so changeable as it happened so far, which is very strange”.

FAUSTO GRESINI

“Also today’s practice has been strongly influenced by the changing track conditions: it was a difficult qualifying session, with the track that dried out in the final stages but still with wet areas. Obviously we expected a better result, but today it was important not to make mistakes. Now we must think about tomorrow, when we hope that the conditions will remain stable, dry or wet, to be able to continue working in the Warm Up ahead of the race”.
