Bastianini takes stunning Aragon pole. Fifth row for Di Giannantonio

Gresini Racing Team Moto3 racer Enea Bastianini will start in front of everyone in tomorrow’s Aragon Grand Prix: the 18-year-old rider from Rimini set the fastest lap in this afternoon’s Qualifying session at Motorland Aragon, with a time of 1’58”293, thus claiming his third pole position of the season after those obtained in Assen and Sachsenring, as well as his seventh consecutive front row start.

The lap time set by Bastianini came thanks to a great lap with 15 minutes to go and no one was able to beat that in the usual “time attack” in the final minutes of the session.

The other Gresini Racing Team Moto3 rider, Fabio Di Giannantonio, will instead start from the fifth row of the grid with the thirteenth fastest time, 1’59”083: the performance of the 17-year-old rookie from Rome was affected by a fall midway through the session. However, “Diggia” remains confident to recover positions in tomorrow’s race.

ENEA BASTIANINI (1st – 1’58”293)

“I’m really satisfied! After yesterday and this morning’s performance we hoped to take the pole position, but we knew it would be difficult. This afternoon, however, the feeling with the bike was immediately good and as a result I was able to make a very good lap, in which I also took advantage of the slipstream of another rider in front of me on the straight. In the final stages I could also try to improve further because as I said the feeling was very good, but on my last lap, trying to overtake another rider I had to take a wider line and I lost grip at the rear on the exit of the corner. Today everything went well, but for the race we still need to figure out in tomorrow morning’s Warm Up if we have also a good pace, and not only the fastest lap. We managed to get a good grip and a good stability, so if we continue to work in the right direction I think that we’ll have fun tomorrow!”.

FABIO DI GIANNANTONIO (13th – 1’59”083)

“I was looking forward to the Qualifying because also the last free practice session, this morning, went really well, with good lap times on hard tyres. In qualifying we used the soft tires for the whole session and the first run immediately went pretty well; later, in the second exit on track, I improved my lap time by a couple of tenths, then unfortunately I made a mistake in downshifting into Turn 5 that led me to crash. I managed to get back to the pits and I was back on track for the final minutes, but in my last lap I made a mistake under braking on the first corner trying to overtake another rider, and so there was just no way to improve. I still remain confident for the race, tomorrow we can do well. We just need to improve a little bit the setting of the bike, but we are in good shape!”.

FAUSTO GRESINI

“In a difficult qualifying session, Enea managed to make a good lap taking advantage of the slipstream of other riders in front of him: in doing this he was able to be really fast also in the last sector of the track and in the final stages no rider was able to catch him. Congratulations to Enea and to the whole team, which worked very well. It’s always nice to get pole position and start in front of everyone, but tomorrow it won’t be an easy race, for sure. Too bad for the crash which didn’t allow Di Giannantonio to take advantage of the whole qualifying session, but Fabio is not so far away and I’m sure that tomorrow he can join the fight at the top too”.
