DIGGIA SHINES UNDER HOME SUN AT MUGELLO AS MARTIN IS 6TH

The sixth Grand Prix of the 2017 Moto3 World Championship has kick started today with the two free practice session of the quarter-litre class, which saw Team Del Conca Gresini’s Fabio Di Giannantonio and Jorge Martin mixing up in the upper part of the timesheets.

Diggia had an extremely strong start on home soil: after a not-so-great FP1 the Rome-born 19-year-old rider managed to improve on his first session best time by almost three seconds as he topped the timesheets courtesy of a 1’57.328secs lap-time. This is the first time for Fabio leading a Moto3 session, which is a good sign ahead of tomorrow’s qualifying.

Martin has spent almost the entirety of his time on track working on his race pace. The Spaniard went out on soft tyres for the first time towards the end of free practice two as he lapped 0.7secs slower than his team mate to finish sixth overall.

Moto3 action will resume tomorrow at 9am local time (GMT +2) for free practice 3, which will be followed by qualifying at 12:35.

1st FABIO DI GIANNANTONIO #21

“This morning we found some good settings and the difference on track was quite clear. Having said that, we can still improve a bit more because there are some areas where I still struggle a little, and I would like to set these kinds of lap-times without pushing to the very limit. Anyway, it’s been great! It’s my first time on top of the timesheets at the end of a session so I can be really happy with it, especially on a track that I love so much and with such amazing crowd on the grandstands.”

6th JORGE MARTIN #88

“Overall it has been a positive day. The feeling with the bike is always very good, even though I still need to find some front-end grip. I rode on my own almost the whole time today, which is very important ahead of the race, so I feel I’m ready. We’ll need to find a good lap-time tomorrow and make the most of slipstreams, so that we can start at the front again. I’m getting better and better with race tyres and today’s time was set with the soft compound option, which is something interesting to keep in mind for tomorrow.”
