#ITALIANGP: RODRIGO INSIDE THE PARC FERMÉ FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 2019

It was in the air for quite some time and now smiles are appearing all over theKömmerling Gresini Moto3pit-box as Gabriel Rodrigo claims a front-row start in the Italian Grand Prix thanks to a superb performance. The Argentine was missing from the first row for one and a half months, when he was third on the grid at Austin.

Ironically enough, Rodrigo qualified into Q2 with only the thirteenth-quickest, played his cards well by choosing not to wait for a good slipstream in such a short session – which can lead to some chaotic final moments. His best time of 1’57.080s lap-time came on the sixth of seven attempts.

Riccardo Rossi was a lot more unlucky: after being very quick in the morning, his lap-time was cancelled by race direction due to exceeding track limits. With that time, the #54 would be 10 positions ahead.

Proceedings will resume tomorrow at 11:00 local time (GMT+2) with Rodrigo aiming at his first podium of the season, with Rossi focused on getting his first finish in the points.

2nd – GABRI RODRIGO #19

“I went for my first quick-lap attempt with a used front-tyre and a hard compound at the rear and did quite an interesting time, which was only half a second slower from my then-fastest lap. I gained confidence and the strategy was get back out with the big group in the second half. After speaking to the team, in light of the chaotic Q1, we decided to ride on our own. To be honest I wasn’t expecting to be on the front row – as it’s difficult to do so without slipstream at this track – and I could have been fairly happy with a second/third row. Despite the head wind we gave it a go: we did a great lap and we’re very confident ahead of tomorrow.”

31st – RICCARDO ROSSI #54

“This morning I was six tenth away from the top and the feeling wsd good. I got into Q1 and I knew I could do well, but it was hard to get hold of things on the track between chaos under braking and slower riders. Unfortunately I got my lap cancelled because in order to avoid a rider I closed the throttle and ran on the synthetic. It’s a shame because we could have been a lot higher up: we’re quick and our pace is good so a top-15 is not out of reach.”
