SHOWTIME FOR MARTIN, 2ND IN #AUSTRIANGP QUALIFYING
It was an unexpected result – if we can call it this way – the one secured by Jorge Martin in today’s qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. It came by surprise because only eight days ago, the young Spaniard underwent surgery; moreover, he was 26th in yesterday’s combined free practice before taking part in a mixed-condition qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring.
Against the odds, the rider #88 of Team Del Conca Gresini Moto3 was able to secure a front-row start after lapping only 0.078secs slower than pole man Bezzecchi – his main rival in the Moto3 title chase.
It was a less-exciting qualifying session for Fabio Di Giannantonio, who reclaims yesterday’s position and therefore will line-up ok the central spot of row five. Despite the regret for the missed chance, the Italian is still charged up for tomorrow’s race – knowing he is good at comebacks.
The #AustrianGP race will begin tomorrow at 11 local time (GMT +2).
2nd – JORGE MARTIN #88
“I was under the knife a week ago, and today I’m in the parc ferme! I feel like it’s something incredible. I even had fun on the bike today: my feeling was good even though I must admit I struggle on left-handed corners. Tomorrow it will all about resiliency: of it won’t be too painful for the first 15 laps, then I will have to make an extra effort if we want to go home with a good result. The idea is to save energy in warm up by lapping the least possible.”
16th – FABIO DI GIANNANTONIO #21
“This morning we had a great session in wet conditions and the feeling with the bike was great. The track was much different in qualifying and I had a tyre problem. We got them changed and things got better. Towards the end, unfortunately, we ran out of fuel when it was time to make a difference, and that ruined our job. We wanted to start much higher up on the grid, but I want to turn things around.”
