CHALLENGING START FOR TEAM KÖMMERLING GRESINI MOTO3 AT LOSAIL

The 2020 season is officially underway for Team Kömmerling Gresini Moto3 who got back to action at the same Losail International Circuit that hosted the last preseason test only five days prior. It was surely not an easy Friday for Gabriel Rodrigo and Jeremy Alcoba who last weekend had a very promising performance, while today had to settle for 17thand 20th, respectively.

Gabriel Rodrigo, who logged a personal best lap-time of 2’05.622secs and completed 20 laps, had surely a complicated Friday. In the morning, the team worked with used tyres for some fine-tuning ahead of the race; in the afternoon, when it was time to use fresh tyres, something did not work well and the Argentine finished with more-than-a-second gap (+1.045secs) from today’s best time. Twenty-four thousandths of a second separate him from 14thplace, which is the lowest position for direct access to Q2.

Jeremy Alcoba managed to complete just a brace of laps more as he finished 20thwith slightly more than a tenth gap from his teammate. The Catalan, rider, who showed good form especially in the hotter FP1, managed to make a step forward on the single lap compared to testing – he was half a second quicker – but the desire to be closer to the front left him with a bit of a bitter taste in his mouth.

Both riders will spearhead their attack for Q2 direct admission from 12:55 local time (GMT+3), the starting time for the FP3 session of #QatarGP.

17th GABRIEL RODRIGO #2

“I would say it was a strange day. During all the test we always managed to be quick without slipstreams or taking any risk, while today I tried to push a bit more and be a bit more aggressive but lap-times weren’t coming. We don’t really know what’s happening: we have seen what’s wrong from the telemetry, but we couldn’t solve our issues between FP1 and FP2. Maybe track conditions changed more than expected. In any case, the race pace with used tyres is not too bad, if not one of the best. It will be hard to get into Q2 via FP3, so we will try to keep working on our race pace and, worst case scenario, to go through Q1. The feeling is not good, however, so we will need a little extra effort to go back to last week’s level.”

20th JEREMY ALCOBA #52

“This morning I was feeling very comfortable with high temperatures. We used only one set of tyres (M and H). The things I was suffering the most from were solved, but in the afternoon I wasn’t able to capitalise as much as I would have liked: we’re close to top-ten time wise, but we’re not there and we’re not in Q2, either. There’s a lot of work to do, especially with lower temperatures, in order to find something set-up wise that can allow us to step up. It’s only Friday, but it’ll be important to be laser focused already from FP3 tomorrow.”
